Wix vs hiring someone to build the site
Wix is a good product. It is also a mall kiosk: easy to open, hard to own, and you pay rent. Hiring someone is a contractor: you pay once (or in a couple of invoices), and the site is a thing you can move.
Where Wix wins
- You enjoy clicking and you will actually log in next month.
- You need to swap a sale banner every Friday without asking anyone.
- You are testing an idea and might shut it down in 60 days.
Where Wix quietly loses
- Time. “I’ll just knock it out this weekend” is how a lot of businesses spend three weekends and still have a lorem-ipsum About page.
- Ceiling. Templates look like templates. Fighting the editor to look custom often takes longer than paying for custom.
- Leaving. Export is not a full website. Moving off Wix is a rebuild. Price that in on day one.
- The meter. $20–$40 a month is $240–$480 a year. In two years you have paid for a $500* site and you still do not own a portable codebase.
