We scored public small-business homepages. The boring things are still broken.
This is not a ranking of “best websites.” It is a count. We fetched public homepages and ran the same ten checks the free tool uses: lock icon, title, meta description, mobile viewport, an H1, a way to contact the business, a share image, a canonical, a language attribute, and image alt text. No logins. No scraping of emails for a list. We did not write to these businesses.
We will not sell this as “only 40% of small businesses have a website.” That number belongs to other people’s surveys. These numbers belong to the pages we actually fetched.
The headline numbers
We attempted 258 URLs and scored 176. 75 did not return a usable homepage (timeout, block, or dead). Mean score 77.2 / 100. Median 80.

A failing check is not a moral verdict. It is the thing a customer notices in five seconds: no padlock, no phone they can tap, a title that says “Home,” a blank square when they text the link.
How we scored (and what we refused to do)
- Same rules as the public checker: HTTPS, title length 12–65, meta description at least 50 characters, viewport tag, an H1, tel/mailto/form, og:image, canonical, lang, all images have alt.
- Public HTML only. User-Agent identifies this report. About a quarter-second between fetches.
- We mixed independent shops, well-known independents, and larger brands people already have in a tab. That mix is on purpose. If we only scored agency-built plumbers, the averages would lie.
- We do not email these businesses. We do not sell the list. Hostnames of scored pages are listed below as methods, not as a shame board.
- We do not promise that fixing a title tag will rank you. Basic SEO here is tags. Rankings are a different job we will not sell inside a $1,000 site.
By the label we gave the URL
Labels are ours (restaurant, plumber, church…). They are not Google categories. Small groups bounce around; do not over-read a cell with six sites.

What this means if you have a shop
If your homepage fails contact, HTTPS, or the viewport tag, you do not have a branding problem. You have a “stranger cannot hire you from a parking lot” problem. That is the work a marketing site is for.
